Charlie was born in 1898 in Jersey City, New Jersey. In 1922, Dixon joined the orchestra of Sam Wooding as a banjo player and then eventually moved on to play with Fletcher Henderson. Dixon was a skilled arranger and provided many musical scores for the Henderson band, which helped establish it as the forerunner of the commercial success of the swing era. After leaving the band he continued in music mostly as an arranger. Charlie passed away on January 7, 1967. |
