DANNY BARKER

Photo by Harold Hopkins circa 1957

Barker was a banjoist and guitar player that grew up in New Orleans in the early 1900's.  He started playing clarinet at an early age and played his first professional job when he substituted for an intoxicated banjo player.  This led to banjo lessons and also a relationship with Lorenzo Stall,  Buddy Bolden's banjoist.  During his youth, Barker was able to listen to some of the great jazz players such as Buddy Bolden and Bunk Johnson.
In 1930 Barker moved to New York City and switched to guitar.  One of the more noted bands that he played with was Cab Calloway's.
