Elmer Snowden, as a band leader, contributed to the success of many top musicians.  He started his career as a guitar player.  In 1912 Eubie Blake invited him to join his band and Elmer switched to the banjo-mandolin.
In 1923 Fats Waller encouraged Elmer to go to New York City and join him but upon arriving Fats Waller was not there.  He called home to a young inspiring pianist named Edward Kennedy ("Duke") Ellington to join his band.
Over the years Elmer worked with Count Basie, Jimmie Lunceford, Bubber Miley, "Tricky" Sam Nanton,  Frank Newton, Benny Carter and Chic Webb.
