The band was formed as a "labor of love" by Art Levin. It quickly become a Southern California favorite because of its big sound and warm feeling. One of The Excelsior Banjo Band's favorite venue was at the "23 Skidoo" in West Los Angeles, just off the U.C.L.A. Campus.
